Beyond The Basics - Improvers class

For anyone wanting to continue training and improving their puppy/dog's skills.

You've been to puppy class, or you've trained at home, or you have a new rescue dog with a few skills .... but ...

- "My puppy is great .... unless..."
- "My puppy comes back really well ... until ..."
- "My puppy can 'Sit!' really well, as long as I have a treat."
- "My puppy knows what to do, they are just stubborn

Teaching useful behaviours like Come When Called, Sit, Down, lead walking in the controlled class environment or a home can go relatively easy and it's easy to assume what our puppy/dog "knows" what to do, so why can't they do it away from home, without food in your hand, when there is more exciting stuff going on, walk nicely on lead in the park, sit when guest come to the door, when there's squirrel?  If any of these statements sound familiar, this is the class for you.

Over these classes, we won't focus on teaching many new behaviours, we'll focus on what your puppy/dog already knows and go through a plan to go through the next phases of dog training to teach your puppy/dog to work with us away from home, with interesting things going on, and without a treat is your hand.
This class explores how to develop your dog's existing skills so they are more likely to respond anytime and anywhere.

- Working through "Distractions"
- Getting food out of your hand (fading lure)
- Endurance/Duration
- Getting food off your body
- Introducing Life Rewards
- Getting more "bang for your buck"

Pre-requisite Skills

Your puppy/dog should have a basic understanding of a few easy behaviours such as responding to their name, Touch, Sit, Down,  Come! or Stay and able to do these relatively well in your home with/without holding food.

We believe in setting our dogs up to succeed, so we start with small steps and build on them at a pace that is right for you and your dog.  No matter how quickly, or slowly, your dog picks up a new skill, we will ensure that you receive individual coaching so that you progress at the rate that is right for you.

Our classes are between 45 and 60 mins and always have time built in for questions to get advice on any challenges you may be facing as a dog owner – as rewarding as living with our dogs is, it’s not always easy!

Not sure? Then please get in touch to ask any questions you may have.

What do you need to bring?

  •  Your dog! Wearing a flat collar and harness, if you use one.

  • A training lead – no retractable or slip leads, please.

  • Food for rewards!  As we use reward-based training, we ‘pay’ our dogs for working for us.  Please bring really tasty treats – chicken, cheese, ham… they only need to be really small – think pea-sized!

  • A mat or blanket for your dog to settle on when not working
  • Water and a bowl
  • A favourite toy
